Jamestown Settlement private tours
Program length: 2 hours
Explore the world of America’s first permanent English settlement and the Powhatan Indian, English and West Central African cultures that came in contact in 17th-century Virginia. Your group will visit expansive exhibition galleries to learn about Jamestown and its people – Powhatan, Pocahontas, John Smith and John Rolfe – and see 1600s artifacts and dioramas.
You’ll also get to take part in an immersive outdoor living-history experience. Educators engage tour participants in a variety of activities, including spinning plant fibers into cordage in a re-creation of Paspahegh Town, playing period games in the re-created English fort, and fully exploring one of the three 1607 ship re-creations, including the officers’ quarters.
Allow extra time at Jamestown Settlement to view the introductory film, “1607: A Nation Takes Root,” shop in the museum store and dine in the Jamestown Settlement Café.
American Revolution Museum at Yorktown private tours
Program length: 2 hours
Experience the story of the American Revolution and the extraordinary challenges of ordinary people who shaped our nation. A private tour allows your group to explore an American Revolution timeline that offers a visual journey from the 13 British colonies in the 1750s to westward expansion of the new United States in the 1790s.
Educators take museum guests through the re-created Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm and engage them in a variety of activities: signing Continental Army enlistment papers, learning about the technology used to fire artillery and muskets, treating injured soldiers and preparing meals at war. At the farm, visitors can play period games, help tend crops and process plant fiber for cloth.
Allow extra time at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown to view the introductory film, “Liberty Fever,” and shop in the museum store.
