Let an educator guide your group on an interactive museum tour that will leave your students wanting more.

Your students will love this hands-on historical experience, and we have several options suited for your needs and educational focus. Browse various field trip options for Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, and get ready to make history. Field trip tours fall into three categories:

General tours explore history through role-playing, examination of primary sources and object analysis. Book an enhanced tour to develop a deeper understanding of 17th-century Jamestown, America’s first permanent English settlement.

Student tours and programs are correlated to the Virginia Standards of Learning, National Standards for History, National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies and Common Core. STEM objectives are incorporated into a number of programs. See detailed program descriptions for more information.

Self-guided tours allow you to explore Jamestown Settlement or the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown entirely at your own pace. Be sure to give yourself a couple of hours to experience all the exhibits you’re interested in.

Field trips to Jamestown Settlement

Guided tours 

  • General Tour – 2 hours
    Suitable for all ages
    Experience the Jamestown story and interactions of the Powhatan Indian, English and West Central African cultures. Features visits to the re-created Paspahegh Town, colonial fort and 1607 ships, as well as the Jamestown Settlement galleries.
  • Government and Leadership Tour – 2 hours
    Grades 4 to adult
    Revisit the leadership in the Powhatan, English and West Central African cultures, and the development of representative government in early colonial Virginia. This tour explores the re-created Paspahegh Town, colonial fort and 1607 ships, as well as the Jamestown Settlement galleries. Virginia Social Studies Standards of Learning Objectives VS.1, VS.2, VS.3, USI.4, USI.5, CE.1, VSU.1, VUS.2.
  • Living-History Sampler Tour – 1 hour
    Suitable for all ages
    Designed to help groups get the most out of a very limited time. Museum educator presents an overview of the re-created Paspahegh Town, colonial fort and 1607 ships.
  • Gallery Sampler Tour – 1 hour
    Great for adult groups
    Get the whole Jamestown story on a tour of our 30,000-square-foot exhibition galleries, chock full of rare artifacts and documents that highlight the story of three cultures in early Virginia – the Powhatan Indians, English and West Central Africans. Program complies with VA Social Studies Standards of Learning.

Field trips to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

Guided tours

  • General Tour – 2 hours
    All ages
    Explores life during the American Revolution, the Revolution’s impact on the diverse people of America, and the development of the new nation. This hands-on experience features visits to the re-created Continental Army encampment, Revolution-era farm, and museum gallery.
  • Revolution and the New Nation – 2 hours
    Grade 9 to adult
    Features engaging activities for secondary school students that highlight the significance of the founding documents of the United States, including the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and Constitution. Students tour the re-created Continental Army encampment, Revolution-era farm, and museum gallery. Virginia Social Studies Standards of Learning Objectives CE.1, CE.2, CE.3, VUS.5, GOVT.1, GOVT.2.
  • Yorktown Living History Sampler Tour – 1 hour
    All ages
    Designed to help groups get the most out of very limited time. Museum educator presents an overview of the re-created Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm. Program complies with VA Social Studies Standards of Learning.
  • Yorktown Gallery Sampler Tour – 1 hour
    All ages, great for adults
    Are you a patriot or a loyalist? Find out which side of the Revolution you stand on as you explore our state-of-the-art interactive exhibits and displays in our gallery. Learn about the people, politics and issues that founded the United States of America. Program complies with VA Social Studies Standards of Learning.

Morning guided tours are fully reserved until December 19, 2024 and from February 19 to May 9, 2025. Please inquire about limited spots for afternoon tours beginning at 1 p.m. Self-guided tours may be booked for any date. 


These tours and programs are for groups of 15 students or more. Field trips and student tours are correlated to Virginia Standards of Learning, National Standards for History, National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies and Common Core. Guided tour reservations require at least three business days in advance and are subject to availability. We recommend making reservations at least two months in advance for fall and winter trips, and up to four months in advance for trips in the spring.
