Afrofuturist Symbolism & Storytelling with Ruth E. Carter

On October 5, 2024 at Jamestown Settlement, two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter discussed Afrofuturism storytelling and the symbolism found within our stories and culture. Joining her was Ytasha L. Womack, an award-winning author, filmmaker, independent scholar and dance therapist.

Womack is a leading expert on Afrofuturism and lectures on the imagination and its applications across the world. Her book "Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci Fi and Fantasy Culture" is taught in colleges and universities, and she is featured in the ongoing Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture’s Afrofuturism exhibit.

Following the conversation, guests were invited to move from the Robins Foundation Theater to the Great Hall for a reception accompanied by the Hampton University Jazz Trio.
