In order to form a more perfect union...

The United States has grappled with how best to balance the rights and responsibilities of individuals with the common good since its beginning. For Constitution Day, September 17, and Virginia Civics Week, September 15 -20, visitors will explore how legacies from early America continue to shape and impact the present. Special programming examines the role of civic engagement in forging a deeper understanding of the world, its people and ourselves.

Activities offered each day, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., include building a constitution, reflecting on the impact of the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution in our daily lives and a timed escape-room experience!

In Amendment Madness participants consider which rights have the biggest impact on our lives. The results will be updated throughout the day so visitors can compare the choices they made to the choices of other visitors.

Build-Your-Own Constitution explores the flexible nature of the U.S. Constitution and examines how constitutions can be adapted as citizen's needs change over time.

The Constitution Escape Room gives visitors the opportunity to apply their knowledge of the American Revolution, the roots of democracy, the U.S. Constitution and the important role citizens have to make it all work as they solve puzzles and answer questions in a fun, hands-on experience.

U.S. Constitution Gallery Exhibits & Interactive

In The New Nation permanent exhibition gallery near a life-size statue of George Washington, the story of America moves forward from the 1783 Treaty of Paris recognizing the United States as an independent nation with boundaries extending to the Mississippi River. Recognition of the need for a stronger national government than provided by the Articles of Confederation adopted during the Revolution led to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the formation in 1789 of the national government that continues to today, a story that unfolds in a short film. An interactive on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights presents question-and-answer scenarios and a document explorer showing how the legacy of the Constitution and Bill of Rights applies to Americans today.
