An Afternoon of Cultural Cuisine

April 28 at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

Explore the multicultural heritage of southern cooking during a special afternoon culinary event on Saturday, April 28,  featuring cooking and conversation with Michael W. Twitty, African American and Jewish culinary historian and author. The program will begin at 2 p.m. near the museum’s  re-created Revolution-era farm.

Michael W. Twitty, a food writer from the Washington, D.C. area, is author of “The Cooking Gene,” tracing his ancestry from Africa to America and from slavery to freedom. Released by HarperCollins in 2017, the book is a finalist for The Kirkus Prize, a literary award.

Twitty blogs at and has appeared on “Bizarre Foods America” with Andrew Zimmern, “Many Rivers to Cross with Dr. Henry Louis Gates,” and has lectured to more than 300 groups. He has served as a judge for the James Beard Awards and is a fellow with the Southern Foodways Alliance and TED and the first Revolutionary in Residence at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Southern Living named Twitty one of “Fifty People Changing the South.”

At the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown’s re-created Revolution-era farm kitchen, historical interpreters demonstrate the cooking of period recipes daily. Visitors can try their hand and mixing ingredients and learning about the evolution of dishes through cultural influences.

Food preparation is for demonstration purposes.
