Registration Open for Children’s Summer History Camps at Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown Victory Center

WILLIAMSBURG, Va., June 16, 2015 – The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation has openings in several children’s summer history camps at Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center, living-history museums that tell the story of America’s beginnings.

Broadside Summer History Camps for children ages 4 through fifth grade on select dates in June and July and a new “School of the Musketeer” Camp at Jamestown Settlement for children ages 9-12 on July 13-16 are open for registration.

School of Musketeer webSchool of the Musketeer Camp — Children ages 9-12 have opportunity to become immersed in the life of an English soldier as they establish the Jamestown colony in 1607. Over the course of four days in the museum’s re-created fort, participants will explore the skills of a 17th-century musketeer — fort construction, cooking, sewing and military tactics, including siege defense, musketry and artillery. Campers will receive a haversack, hat and toy wooden musket. Program Dates/Cost: July 13-16, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. $200 per child. Broadside Summer History Camps — Children ages 4 through fifth grade enjoy summer fun with an educational twist on colonial American history through hands-on activities, games, stories and take-home crafts. Yorktown Adventure Camp (Ages 4-6) – Day 1: Don’t Let it Bug You – Lend a hand in the Revolutionary-period farm to care for the crops and decorate a bug box and a fuzzy critter to keep inside. Day 2: Yankee Doodle Dandies – Just like Yankee Doodle, make your own hobbyhorse to ride through the re-created Continental Army encampment to learn about life of a soldier. Program Dates/Cost: July 8-9, 1-3 p.m.; July 20-21, 1-3 p.m. $25.00 per child.

Broadside - Forging AheadJamestown Discovery Camp (Completed Grades 1-2) – Day 1: Forging Ahead – Explore the blacksmith’s forge in a re-created fort and produce a special tin-punch craft. Day 2: Sticks and Stones – Visit the re-created Powhatan Indian village to learn how the culture made tools of wood, bone, stones, shell and clay, and make a turkey-feather fan. Program Dates/Cost: June 25-26, 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-3 p.m.; July 6-7, 1-3 p.m.; July 23-24, 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-3 p.m. $25.00 per child.

Yorktown Discovery Camp (Completed Grades 1-2) – Day 1: Papermaker – Learn about 18th-century papermaking and the documents of the Continental Army. Campers will make paper tents and compare their camp with the museum’s re-created camp. Day 2: Wicks and Wax – Children will learn about colonial candlemaking and make their own candle and decorate a wooden candle holder with their own special crest. Program Dates/Cost: June 23-24, July 8-9, July 20-21, 9:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-3 p.m. $25.00 per child.

Yorktown Colonial Capers (Completed Grades 3-5) – Day 1: Too Close for Comfort – Explore the impact of Revolutionary War soldiers setting up camp on a family farm. Turn rope into a special macramé project and make your own patriotic cap. Day 2: Supplying the Army – Discover the efforts to supply Continental Army troops with necessary supplies, including tents, tools and food, and make a cart and animal to pull it and haul your important supplies. Program Dates/Cost: June 25-26, July 6-7, July 27-28, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. $28.00 per child.

Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Registration is by mail only. Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., Annual Fund donors at the Rochambeau Club level and above receive a 10 percent discount on summer education programs.
