WILLIAMSBURG, Va., August 31, 2016 – “Arctic Ocean – The Case for Maritime Governance,” a public lecture by retired U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Robert J. Papp Jr. at 3 p.m., Sunday, September 11, at the Yorktown Victory Center, is the concluding event of the 2016 National Marine Art Conference, taking place September 8-11 at several venues in Greater Williamsburg. Organized by the American Society of Marine Artists, the four-day conference includes a plein air (open air) “paint out” at Jamestown Settlement on Saturday morning, September 10, where museum visitors can observe marine artists interpreting on canvas their impressions of the Susan Constant, a re-creation of the largest of the three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists to Virginia in 1607.

In the September 11 lecture at the Yorktown Victory Center, Admiral Papp will discuss how the Arctic Ocean is changing from a solid expanse of inaccessible ice fields into a growing navigable sea, attracting increased human activity and various economic and environmental opportunities, and the role of governments in providing for the safety and security of their people and ensuring environmentally responsible activity.

The Yorktown Victory Center, transitioning to American Revolution Museum at Yorktown in mid-October, and Jamestown Settlement are living-history museums operated by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, an agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Admission to the Yorktown Victory Center, located at 200 Water Street in Yorktown, is $9.75 for adults, $5.50 for ages 6-12. Admission to Jamestown Settlement, located at 2110 Jamestown Road, is $17.00 for adults, $8.00 for ages 6-12. A combination ticket for both museums is $21.25 for adults, $10.75 for ages 6-12.
