Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Announces New Deputy Director/Senior Director of Administration & Chief Development Officer

WILLIAMSBURG, Va., June 29, 2022 – The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is pleased to announce the July 5 arrival of two new directors, Dr. Juliet Machie as deputy director/senior director of administration and Melissa Thompson as chief development officer.

Juliet Machie_JYF Deputy-Senior Director of AdministrationAs deputy director/senior director for administration, Dr. Machie will oversee the Foundation’s departments in finance, information technology, security, facilities and grounds maintenance and retail operations. Machie is a seasoned leader with expertise in organizational strategy, budgeting, planning and project management. She has worked predominantly in libraries and higher education throughout her career, notably with experiences in library service, leadership, organization development, public relations, facilities management and enterprise solutions.

She most recently served as the executive director of the New Jersey Library Association, working collaboratively with federal, state and local governments and community organizations, and previously served as an interim executive and strategic consultant for Library Link New Jersey. She has served in leadership roles at the Detroit, Mich., library system, managing capital projects and budgets of up to $51 million. She also served as an adjunct professor at two university graduate programs, teaching library sciences and organizational management.

She holds a doctorate in education from Grand Canyon University, a master’s in library science from North Carolina Central University, as well as master’s and undergraduate degrees from Southern University in Louisiana.

Melissa Thompson, Chief Development Officer

Melissa Thompson_JYF Chief Development OfficerThompson, who will lead national fundraising efforts of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., has more than 30 years of progressive development experience, with the past two decades in senior-level positions. She began her development career at William & Mary and later The Citadel and U.S. Naval Institute.

She previously served as chief development officer of the Army Historical Foundation/National Museum of the U.S. Army, developing a robust fundraising operation that increased annual giving 35 percent, year over year. She successfully implemented a $200 million capital campaign for the museum that opened in 2020, raising more than half in a five-year period. She has served as vice president of external affairs for the Historic Annapolis Foundation, increasing membership by 37 percent and fundraising by 116 percent, and then as director of development at National Public Radio, increasing giving by 50 percent during her tenure.

Thompson holds a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and an undergraduate degree from William & Mary.

The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is an agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia that administers two living-history museums, Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
