WILLIAMSBURG, Va., February 24, 2020 — “African-American Cultural Heritage Month” at Jamestown Settlement will culminate with a lively celebration of African-American culture and heritage honoring the legacy of the first African woman mentioned by name in the historical record at Jamestown as “After Angelo” returns for a special one-day event on Saturday, February 29.
Festivities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be filled with music, song, storytelling, face painting, crafts and games for the whole family. Live entertainment will feature a traditional African Libation by Corey Staten of Atumpan Edutainment and periodic performances by Atumpan Dance Theatre, Historic First Baptist Church Choir and Claves Unidos. Throughout the day, local organizations, artists and vendors that serve, promote and empower the African-American community will be on hand to share their stories, resources and activities with event attendees.
At 3 p.m., a panel discussion and audience talk-back moderated by Barbara Hamm Lee, host of WHRO/WHRV’s “Another View,” will explore “Talking about Race in Mixed Race Spaces” – a topic that examines how to engage about race in ways that further understanding, whether in the context of history or the modern day, in museums, schools, workplaces and on social media.
Visitors can tour gallery exhibits at Jamestown Settlement that explore the experiences of Africans and African-Americans in early Virginia, examining the culture of the first west central Africans to arrive in 1619 and comparing it with that of the English and Powhatan Indians they encountered at Jamestown, with special educational programs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through February 29.
Jamestown Settlement, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, is located on Route 31 just southwest of Williamsburg. Parking is free. “After Angelo” is included with museum admission: $17.50 for adults, $8.25 for ages 6-12 and free for children under 6. Residents of James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg, including William & Mary students, receive free admission with proof of residency.
