Before you purchase that box of dye for your next at-home project, tune in on Wednesday, July 8 at 4:30 p.m. as Farm Site Supervisor Gretchen Johnson discusses “Dyeing Fabric Using Natural Dyes” LIVE from the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown as she shares how to create a variety of beautiful colors using natural dyes from the 18th-century. Discover how Indigo plants, Cochineal bugs and Annatto seeds can produce striking colors and color combinations that will transform silk and cotton scarves, stockings and wool skeins as they are removed from the dye pots. You Mean You Can Eat That?

Have you ever walked through the woods and wondered about all the plants surrounding you? Did you ever wonder if any of these plants were edible? Join Grounds Department Supervisor Bain Schultz and Historical Interpreter Russell Reed at Jamestown Settlement as they discuss common foods eaten by the Powhatan Indians. The session will include information on the regional differences of the Powhatan diet, the seasonality of the diet, how the Powhatan preserved food for the winter and research involved in documenting this information. A cooking demonstration will show how the Powhatan Indians used and prepared many items that, today, we consider to be weeds – including Matakuskc (Prickly pear or Indian Fig), Poskamatk (Red Mulberry), Cawindgus (Briers), Paucauns (Black Walnut) and more.

Cooking with Herbs

Do you like to grow herbs, but then aren’t sure how to use them to their fullest potential in the kitchen? Join us for “Cooking with Herbs” from the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown as historic foodways interpreter Rob Brantley discusses how herbs were used in an 18th-century kitchen. Learn about harvesting herbs and which are better used fresh and which should be dried before using. We’ll conclude as Rob shares 18th-century recipes and cooking techniques using herbs from the Museum’s garden. Receipts (recipes) for this session include:

Ducks Alamode
Take two fine ducks, cut them into quarters, fry them in butter a little brown; then pour out all the fat, and throw a little flour over them, and half a pint of good gravy, a quarter of a pint of red wine, two shallots, an anchovy and a bundle of sweet herbs; cover them close, and let them stew a quarter of an hour; take out the herbs, skim off the fat, and let your sauce be as thick as cream; send it to table, and garnish with lemon.

Carrots and French Beans Dressed the Dutch Way
Slice the carrots very thin, and just cover them with water, season them with pepper and salt, cut a good many onions and parsley small, a piece of butter; let them simmer over a slow fire till done. Do French beans the same way.
